An electrolytic capacitor uses an electrolyte (a liquid or gel containing a high concentration of ions) to achieve a large capacitance than the other capacitor types. These electrolytic capacitors are polarized, meaning that the voltage on the positive terminal must always be greater than the voltage on the negative terminal. They are commonly used as filters in devices in various power supplies to reduce the voltage ripple as well as input and output smoothing as an LPF.

Low ESR Capacitors.

ESR stands for Equivalent Series Resistance. Capacitors, like all electronic components, are never just pure capacitance; there are always inherent series resistances due to connecting leads and internal structures. Taken all together, these resistances are represented as a single ESR. Electrolytic capacitors can have a significant ESR. Typically, an electrolytic capacitor is used as energy stored to 'hold up' a voltage rail between pulses of current from a rectifier. Each current pulse charging the capacitor causes power losses in the series resistance, both heating up the capacitor and increasing the ripple voltage. Further losses occur when the capacitor discharges into load. For mains frequency power supplies this may not be such a problem. However, for switching power supplies that run at 10 s of kilohertz, a Low ESR capacitor reduces heating losses and provides the best filtering.
