This adapter can replace a hard disk drive. Once the system starts with this adapter & a CF card attached, the CF card appears to the system as an IDE disk drive. Unlike other flash storage systems, such as disk-on-chip modules, this solution does not require device driver or additional software to run the unit. CF card can be the primary boot device containing the OS and application or a secondary storage.

The ATA interface itself evolved in several stages from Western Digital's original Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) interface.
After the introduction of Serial ATA (SATA) in 2003, the original ATA was renamed to Parallel ATA or PATA for short. For years, ATA provided the most common & least expensive interface for this application
